I am amazed that people do this. What Calliie didn't mention is that they also lowered their population by doing so and I don't understand how that is a plus, unless they are playing ONLY to buy decos with real money.
Yes, it lowers the population, but it doesn't affect any other thing, that is the fields that you have bought remained as is, no changes are make to it. If you still need to build community buildings s then that is a whole different story. But for those who are done with all community buildings there is no issue.
Disclaimer: I don't sell my houses. But I have a lot of friends who do that. They will sell then they will buy back and build them again. why they do that.

Long ago, I was in a coop that someone sold the small houses so that he could move the people into large flats instead of the dinky houses. None of us had space back then, you see... I do not think this is wise as a tactic, but everyone plays this game their own way... I offer an example of one person's thinking on this situation.
When growing my town and levelling up, I basically had to build the next house which appeared. Regardless that some of the apartments are incredibly ugly. By the time I finished most of the community buildings, there were a selection of nicer apartments to choose from. So I sold some of the ugly and built more of the nice. From checking out good looking towns and their great designs, I have discovered some clever ways of hiding smaller houses and even some community buildings where they cannot be seen.
I also choose not to have max population, because I just do not want the Hydro power plant in my town. I have plenty of fields an it doesn't seem to have a detrimental effect on my town at all. This came about because I read early on in the forum that once community buildings are built, we cannot sell them or give them away. And so I held off building it, hoping I wouldn't be forced to..and I wasn't.
