 "99 Luftballons was created against the backdrop of the final phase of the Cold War in Germany in the 1980s.
As a result of the NATO Dual Decision of 1979, the deployment of nuclear Pershing II missiles began in Germany in 1983. The nuclear armament led to fears that the danger of nuclear war was increasing and therefore met with massive resistance in parts of the population. These formed in the peace movement of the 1980s.
The song tells how 99 balloons float in the sky, mistaken for UFOs, and a general sends a squadron of 99 jet fighters after them to sound the alarm, if that were the case. But the air squadron shoots at the balloons in the sky, which is now mistaken for an attack by 99 war ministers of the neighbouring states as well being used as an excuse to military expand their own sphere of influence.The consequence of 99 years of war is the end of human civilisation on Earth."
